Bridal portraits are such an important part of your wedding day. Whether you love to pose for the camera or prefer a candid vibe, these photos will bring back the most precious memories that you will love looking back on in years to come.
There are a lot of things to consider with bridal portraits and how they factor in with the timing of your day. So my first question is:
What time of year are you getting married
This really shapes the game mainly because daylight is a major part of bridal portraits. For instance if you are getting married in Winter the sun will set a lot quicker. In that case you might like to consider having an early ceremony in order to leave time after the ceremony to have photos taken, or to have a first look. Summer weddings obviously have a lot more time to play with so this isn’t a huge factor you will need to worry about.
How long is your wedding photography package and are you willing to extend?
Photography packages generally start around the 6 hour mark. This covers all of the formalities and a sprinkling of the fun stuff once the toasts are done and cake is cut. It is important to factor this into your bridal portraits because it will help make the decision of when you might have them in your day. For instance if your ceremony is at 3:00PM, a six hour package will wrap up by 9:00PM. A longer day means more flexibility and time for some beautiful candid shots. However it also means your day will likely cost more with extensions on packages just like photography.
Do you mind seeing each other before the ceremony, or do you want to keep that first look to be when you walk down the aisle?
This is an important question because it opens up to the idea of a first look, when you will capture those all important bridal party photos and what time your ceremony will kick off.
If you aren’t sure what a first look is, it’s meeting up with your partner prior to the ceremony where you see each other for the first time on the day all dressed to the nines. The moment you realise you are about to have one of the best days of your lives together! With the bonus that it’s all captured on film with your photographer. A first look also leads into your bridal portraits with your epic bridal party, and gets the unofficial party started (bring the champagne and chink those glasses!).
About the First Look
Having a first look is great for couples who might be feeling those pre-wedding jitters. Or for couples that want to spend a bit more time capturing those moments wrapped in their partner’s arms, swoon! Seeing your love before the ceremony takes a lot of the pressure off. It also allows you to both laugh together, take a deep breath and realise that this is actually happening! You will feel a sense of ease walking into your ceremony after having that time together.
Another benefit you gain from doing First Look photos is time. The time that you would normally need to leave your wedding, during the cocktail hour, to duck out and have wedding portraits can now be spent enjoying the wedding you have been so excited for! No need to rush out in order to get those photos before the sun goes down. Or jumping from location to location only to try and make it back to the venue in time for your bridal entrance. You and your now married love can sip bubbly while chatting to your loved ones and actually enjoy the epic grazing table set up in your cocktail space!
There are some things to consider about a first look such as price. If you do choose to have this magic moment before your ceremony it can mean needing to extend your photography package depending on the time of your ceremony. Not to mention if you are also having getting ready photos which might take up around 2 hours prior to this as well.
A first look isn’t for you?
‘I am all about seeing your husband or wife to be for the first time down the aisle. That moment of pure excitement/joy/ever so consuming love is felt throughout the room as you lock eyes for the first time. Followed by a longer bougie cocktail hour, where you are whisked off by your photographer to get all of those bridal shots- talk about a love bubble!’
-words by Callin, Nudo Events coordinator
Of course the first look is not for everyone. It is non-traditional and does mean you see each other before the wedding. If you want to keep that special moment for when your eyes first meet as you’re walking down the aisle then photos after the ceremony are the perfect option for you.
After the ceremony photography!
What goes with seeing each other for the first time as you walk down the aisle, like wine goes with cheese?- An earlier ceremony and extended cocktail hour. Having an earlier ceremony is amazing because it means you get to kick off the big celebration sooner, and save those last few hours of sunlight for some epic photography.
After your ceremony, you and your bridal party will get to adventure off while your guests have a nibble on canapés or a grazing board and cheers to the newlyweds with some champagne. A longer cocktail hour also means you can make it back just in time to enjoy the last bit of the grazing table, grab a cocktail and take it all in with your family and friends.
Whatever you both decide, you are going to get some dreamy photos on your big day!! It is all about working out what works best for you as a couple on the day. You want to be stress free, all loved up and focused on the fun!
