The modern wedding is so customisable! There are so many options when planning your special day that can help it reflect you both as a couple. Catering is a big one! If you are looking for more of a casual party vibe, we’ve got a suggestion for you. Food Trucks!
Ahhh there is something special about food trucks. The tiny novelty that churns out amazing authentic food. Their mobility means they can be anywhere and work with most venues. Having an outdoor property wedding, or does your venue need hire in kitchen facilities? Well that is no problem for food trucks! Not to mention they are super cute, and a fun and interactive addition to any event.
Another great thing about food trucks is they tend to be more cost effective. This can open you up to spend some of that saved cash on another aspect of your wedding (hint hint, florals). Or you might decide why have one food truck when you can have two! Perfect when you and your partner are torn between two different food options. Tacos and Bahn Mi for everyone! Or you might like to factor in a desert food truck so there is a little something sweet for later! Whatever your preference, every cent saved with a wedding helps!
Now I know what you’re thinking- sign me up! But there are a few things to go through that you need to consider when booking a food truck for your wedding!
Make sure they cater for dietaries
When picking your food trucks you want to make sure there is an option for everyone. A great thing about traditional caterers is they can cater specifically to all dietaries. So if Aunt Mary is gluten free and dairy free, and your friend Matt is Vegan, they have them both covered! With food trucks, their menus can be on the smaller side as they have a smaller space to work in! So it always pays to enquire on if/how they cater to dietaries, and have some examples in mind of people in your life that need that extra care with food choices. The last thing you want is someone at your wedding not being able to eat! After all they need all the energy they can get for the dance floor.
What are their food service options?
Traditionally food trucks require you to order up at the truck. However with the increasing popularity of them, many are offering cocktail service as well! So it’s great to ask what each individual vendor does supply. You may also need to factor in an additional staff member to keep the space looking clean. Where traditional caterers have people to clear plates, food trucks do not. So unless you want a stack of paper trays or plates piled on your cocktail table, discuss options for having some roving staff for cleaning. Also keep in mind that their kitchen space is small, and there are probably a lot of guests at your wedding! So there may be a bit of a line or wait time for people to get your food. But chances are if you are having one at your wedding, you’ve eaten with one before. So you know the go with the ordering process. Just be aware that not everyone is used to that at a wedding!
Is there somewhere accessible for them to park?
The whole fun of a food truck is allowing your guests to go up to them and order. It adds to the relaxed and fun vibe you would be trying to create. So it’s important to chat to your venue about accessibility for these trucks. Can your guests comfortable go from where the reception is, to where the food is? Don’t forget, these trucks are pretty big! So make sure there isn’t anything obstructing them from getting to the open space they will serve out of. A narrow laneway might not be the best spot!
Think about the weather!
So the seasons play a part on if food trucks are a good option for your wedding day. Warmer months are a good option when you consider that your guests might need to wait outside for their food once they order. You will find guests naturally just gravitate towards the trucks anyway. If it is cold and windy it’s not an ideal situation. However as we all know the weather sometimes has a mind of its own! So even if you are getting married in March, always make sure you have a contingency plan on where the trucks can park if it starts to rain. Is there a covered dock area at your venue that they can re-direct the trucks to on the day if those clouds aren’t looking promising?
What about drinks and alcohol?
With good food there must also be good drinks! What is a wedding if there isn’t a beverage to toast with! Some food trucks may have their liquor license and be able to add beverage service to their list of talents! However this isn’t the case for everyone. So you may need to hire an additional supplier just to focus on the service of your drinks. Never fear, there are many amazing companies out there that specialise in just that! They come equiped with glassware, bar equipment and even rollaway bars if you need! We have worked with Refresh Hospitality, Liquid Infusion and Easy Bar many times before and they have it covered! They even have BYO alcohol package options too. It does however mean possibly adding another supplier to the list.
