WINTER WEDDINGS AT THE WOOL MILL

BY SARAH DE RANGO

After a busy season of beautiful summer weddings, we cannot express our excitement for the upcoming winter months, because she says that a winter wedding shouldn’t be on the cards? While many couples opt for sunshine, warm weather and outdoor nuptials, there are plenty of amazing ways to bring the heat to a winter wedding!

If you need a dreamy venue to host your mid-year nuptials, say hello to The Wool Mill, an inner Melbourne warehouse venue fit with charm and modernity.

ALL INDOORS WITH MANY DIFFERENT SPACES

When it comes to a winter wedding, nobody wants to spend time outside. As much as you may be dreaming of an outdoor ceremony or cocktail hour, the last thing you want is guests getting caught in the rain, wind or chill. In winter, the venue has got to be the most pivotal aspect of your day as it has a variety of boxes to tick to ensure everyone can enjoy themselves as much as possible. Need a suggestion? Don’t worry, we’ve got the one for you!

Meet The Wool Mill. Located in the heart of Brunswick East, this modern warehouse provides three spaces that flow effortlessly from one to the other. This fabulous feature eliminates the need for guests to travel between two different ceremony and reception locations, meaning once they arrive, they never have to leave the comfort and warmth of this space.

From the cocktail area, ‘I do’ ceremony room, and grand Feasting Hall, each space is climate controlled so you and your guests will remain toasty all night long.

Another advantage? There is ample street parking just outside of the doors meaning that your loved ones can say goodbye to that dreaded trek from the car to the front doors, and won’t have to worry about driving around begging for a spot to open up for you!

SPECIAL TOUCHES TO ADD THE HEAT

We don’t know about you, but when we think winter, we think hot chocolate! And while this may not be the drink that comes to mind when planning a wedding, it’s all about creating fun and unique twists that are bound to wow your guests. Our idea – a hot chocolate bar of course! Perfect for your young guests, and with the ability to add alcohol to create a decadent boozy hot chocolate for the adults. This addition can be served all night long from cocktail hour, or rolled out after dinner as a late-night treat to keep your guests toasty and warm. If hot chocolate isn’t quite your beverage of choice, why not opt for a mulled wine or warmed apple cider? The options are endless!

When it comes to styling the space for your winter wonderland, it’s all about the candles. Whether it’s pillar, tapered or tealight candles, these can be placed all over the venue on cocktail tables, in the bar, along guest tables and even on the floor around your ceremony backdrop to add a romantic and dreamy feel. Once the sun goes down, prepare to marvel at the moody lighting and warmth that they add to the space and how they add the perfect winter feel to your wedding!

Winter weddings simply thrive on moody tones, but that doesn’t mean it has to be dark and dull. If you’re not sure where to start with your colour palette, how about deep, rich tones like burgundy, forest green, black, complemented by a pop of gold? These colours are bound to make the space feel like a warm hug, and when it’s paired with velvet napkins or chairs, it’s just *chef’s kiss*.

PHOTOGRAPHY LOOKS GREAT WHEN IT'S OVERCAST AND RAINING

Now, we know that your first reaction to clouds on your wedding day is one of despair, but we have good news – it’s not all bad! Overcast conditions are actually perfect for wedding photos. No more squinty eyes, direct sunlight casting on your frames, or need for filtering the lighting. Rather, a cloudy sky actually creates texture that provides the ideal backdrop for photos and allows you two love birds to stand out.

If you do encounter rain, don’t let it deter you, opt for pre-ceremony shots before the sun goes down, and gather some clear umbrellas to add some fun to your photos! Clear umbrellas allow for light to still shine through from above and create contrast with beautiful reflections created by the rain, as compared to dark umbrellas which will block the light and create a shadow. These bad boys will not only keep you dry, but they also make for a super cute prop and add extra charm to the photos. Go on, snuggle up under a brolly with your entourage as you frolic through the streets! See, it’s not all bad!
